By Luiz Fernando Toledo

Venezuela was the country who had the most citizens forced to flee to other countries in 2021, according to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency.

There were over 600,000 venezuelan leaving the country, most of them having Latin American as destination, in countries such as Peru (276,400), Colombia (112,800) and Ecuador (102,105). At least 17 countries host venezuelans.

The data also shows that more than 5.4 million venezuelans, including refugees, asylum seekers and other displaced people, have left the country since 2017. Only in 2018, more than 2 million left the country.

"Children, women and men continue to leave Venezuela for neighbouring countries and beyond due to the ongoing political, human rights and socio-economic developments in their country. Many arrive scared, tired and in dire need of assistance", says UNHCR in their website.
